Swedish Blue Sterling Silver Wire Wrap Necklace
$ 222.00
The Swedish Blue Sterling Silver Wire Wrap Necklace is the first piece of jewelry I made on Skål, our new catamaran boat. It's a one of a kind sterling silver creation. The pendant is 1 1/4 inches tall, 3/4 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick. The chain is a diamond etched twist chain and its 20 inches long.
Swedish Blue, also known as Bergslaggsten, is a historic slag glass from iron smelting in the 1600's. Central Sweden, Bergslagen area has had mining, metal smelting and metalworking since the 13th century. They used small coal ovens to make the iron. The stone was formed when the oven was hot enough to glaze the ore. The slag floated at the top of the melt and was discharged from furnace before the metal. The blue-green shades come from the elements of copper in the material, which otherwise consists mostly of silica.
Although Swedish Blue is a run off from a man made smelting process, it's comprised of all natural minerals. Some pieces are translucent, others opaque and many times you see a mixture of both in one piece.
I got this piece of Swediah Blue from the miners themselves at the Denver Gem Show. It's been very popular at shows and I plan to get more this year.
